Elon Musk’s X Secures Licenses Across Multiple U.S. States for Payment Processing, Including Crypto Transactions
Posted at August 31, 2023 | Post by Victor Rollman
Elon Musk’s revolutionary social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter, has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining licenses for money and currency transmission in seven key U.S. states. Notably, these states include Maryland, New Hampshire, and most recently, Rhode Island.
In a strategic move, Elon Musk’s visionary social media platform, X, formerly Twitter, has successfully acquired licenses permitting money and currency transmission across seven crucial U.S. states. This achievement includes the latest approval from Rhode Island, marking a pivotal step in the platform’s evolution.
While the newly acquired license in Rhode Island certainly enables the processing of cryptocurrency payments, it also encompasses a broader spectrum, encompassing payment providers such as PayPal and Venmo.
X, the brainchild of tech magnate Elon Musk and the rebranded version of Twitter, has made significant strides in recent months by securing payment licenses from several prominent U.S. states. Notably, the platform recently obtained a currency transmission license from Rhode Island, a testament to its commitment to innovation and growth.
Elon Musk’s inclination towards supporting cryptocurrency within the platform has been evident, as seen through actions like temporarily replacing Twitter’s iconic bird logo with the Dogecoin dog. This strategic move coincided with the platform’s rebranding to X. While the licenses undeniably pave the way for crypto-related endeavors, they are equally poised to facilitate a wider array of payment services.
Elon Musk’s strategic vision for X extends far beyond conventional social media posts. With ambitious plans to transform X into an encompassing ‘everything app,’ the acquisition of money transmitter licenses holds immense significance. These licenses, obtained since June from states like Arizona, Maryland, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, and New Hampshire, suggest that Elon Musk’s grand vision may involve nationwide payment processing akin to the offerings of Venmo or PayPal—an enterprise he played a pivotal role in founding. Moreover, the acquisition of a currency transmission license in Rhode Island, while vital for payment processing, is also a prerequisite for introducing cryptocurrency-related services.
In a revealing text message shared just days before the groundbreaking offer to acquire Twitter for a staggering $43 billion in April 2022, Musk emphasized the need for a novel social media enterprise built on blockchain technology and integrated with payment functionalities.
Clarifying common inquiries, Rhode Island’s Department of Business Regulation (DBR) provides insights into the scope of these licenses. The approved firms encompass those engaged in money transmission on behalf of customers, covering traditional wire transfers (akin to Western Union) and digital transfers (resembling PayPal).
This state’s endorsement for currency transmission is equally applicable to cryptocurrency exchange and custody operations, with specific exemptions for fintech entities registered as authentic ‘agents’ of licensed currency transmitters in Rhode Island. These exemptions apply in instances where money transmission does not serve as the fintech’s primary revenue source.
While the newly acquired licenses undoubtedly pave the way for cryptocurrency payment integration, their scope extends far beyond this domain. For instance, in New Hampshire, ‘money transmission’ encompasses activities involving the sale or issuance of payment instruments, as well as stored value. Moreover, the acceptance and transmission of convertible virtual currency, or its purchase and sale, categorize an administrator or exchanger as a money transmitter under federal regulations.
It’s noteworthy that established players such as Western Union and PayPal hold analogous licenses in the same states, aligned with their respective service offerings and geographic reach.
